Elizabeth Gilbert: Committed
In her last best-selling memoir Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert went on a self-discovery trip through three different countries to overcome a nasty divorce. It ended with her falling in love with Felipe, an also-divorced Brazilian businessman that she met in Bali.
They have managed to stay in the relationship for two years avoiding – or more likely, intentionally blocking – the idea of marriage. It worked until their relationship was jeopardised when Felipe faced a visa re-entry problem that would force him to be deported from the USA , and guess what the only way to get a new green card is?
So they set another self-discovery trip, this time determined not to let anything destroy their imminent marriage. While some people would settle for simple elderly advice or a quick search, Gilbert goes through every possible aspect of marriage across continents, cultures and religions as she sums it all up in Committed.
We now can see why marriage, to the author, has become more of ’an intervention from the United State Department of Home Land Security,’ than a sweet union that binds couples forever. It can be felt through her writing exactly how she feels; and that’s what makes this book easy to relate to. Even if the reader hasn’t experienced a similar situation; empathy becomes effortless when the feelings are so clearly expressed.
However, the topic of marriage isn’t attractive in itself unless you’re seeking to learn more about marriage and why sometimes it works and other times it doesn’t. Committed pales drastically in comparison to Eat, Pray, Love, which touched readers around the world with its new-age, daring adventure. Committed is all about data collected from different cultures.
The reader might disagree with some of Gilbert’s views in this book, but if one thing is constant; it’s her witty style that entertains yet provides logic and depth. After all, she does manage to quote both Oscar Wilde and Marge Simpson on the same subject.
Over all, Gilbert has clearly put her heart and mind into this book, creating a work that is meaningful enough to keep the reader riveted until the end. However, this book may not appeal to you if you’re not interested in history and travel writing; as it makes up the core content of Committed.
Penny Vincenzi's latest novel The Decision tells the story of Eliza Fullerton-Clark and Matt Shaw who live in London in the 60s. Eliza is a society girl, carving out a career for herself in the fashion industry and Matt becomes a millionaire by working in the property market.
Introduced by Eliza's brother, they get married, but it's not long before their seemingly-solid marriage goes downhill. Eliza wants to keep pursuing her career, but Matt's old-fashioned notions require her to stay at home and raise their only girl, Emmie.
The entire story is pretty much given away in the synopsis. It feels like the author is robbing you of the element of surprise; you already know they are getting a divorce. The only part that the author holds back on until the end of the novel is the results of the court battles over custody of their daughter. Emmie is a spoiled brat of a child; a fact that makes it difficult for readers to sympathize with her.
There are many subplots seamlessly woven into the main plot, adding richness and depth to the story. Readers might even find themselves more interested in the fates of the secondary characters than Eliza's and Matt's.
Vincenzi's writing is laden with poignancy. She accurately describes how marriages that are often fuelled by so much passion can gradually deteriorate into a battle. In this aspect, Eliza and Matt are extremely relatable.
The Decision is such a long read, but that doesn't detract from its enjoyment. The longer pages only mean additional engagement with the characters' lives, but it also means that Vincenzi ends up repeating herself quite often.
The story captures many of the time’s ill-founded ideas against women, but it also includes many female characters that challenged the ideologies of the 60s. Louise, Matt's business partner, is a headstrong woman who won't let anything come between her and her goals, while his sister Scarlett is another female character who does things her own way.
The author takes readers back to the 60s and offers vivid portraits of different aspects of life back then; however, the plot could have easily fit into any other time.
Vincenzi's avid fans might find The Decision a tad disappointing. It's not quite as addictive as the rest of her novels, and it generally sticks to the author's pattern, making it even more predictable.
Behind every successful man stands a great woman – or so the saying goes. Too bad we rarely get to see or hear anything about those women. Lily Koppel’s The Astronaut Wives Club aims to change that by telling the story of the wives of active NASA between 1959 and 1972.
With all eyes on the man going into space, one can’t help but wonder what it must be like for his significant other waiting for his safe return home. “If not for the wives.” Koppel notes in the first chapter, “man might never have walked on the moon.”
While this statement is true, the writer still paints a pretty sad and one-dimensional portrait of the majority of these women. They come across as airheads; quibbling about smoking in cars, concerned with what colour lipstick to wear when photographed for the cover of Time magazine, and wondering whether or not they will get to meet Jacky Kennedy.
The emphasis is on them being good housewives; setting everything aside in honour of their husband’s career and working jobs to get him through university, whilst foregoing their own education. Whatever emotional insight one hopes to find in the lives of these women is limited to whatever they told the press at the time. Judging from the epilogue, Koppel interviewed many of them personally and must have accumulated a treasure trove of insightful quotes. Curiously, almost none of that material made it into the book.
Without taking a feminist stance, this book is nothing short of ridiculous. It is understood that this is how women were viewed in 50s and 60s America, but that is no reason to keep that stereotype intact fifty years later. If the goal of this book is to make readers feel sorry for these ‘astrowives’, then that mission has been accomplished with honours.
To be fair though, the astronauts themselves aren’t portrayed too favourably either; they are mostly characterised as reprehensible men that cheat on their wives and compete with each other in testosterone-filled petty contests.
Aside from the misogyny, the book has several other issues. Initially, there are seven astrowives, later followed by another nine, and then fourteen more, making it rather difficult to keep up with who is who.
On top of that, Koppel is curiously brief about the most important one of them all – Neil Armstrong – and completely ignores his significant other. The first man on the moon is barely mentioned and his wife is not even named, even though the Apollo 11 mission is discussed in the book. To make it all that much stranger, Janet Armstrong does pop up in a few shots in the picture section of the book.
There is a website to go with the book, www.astronautwivesclub.com, but unsurprisingly, it is also remarkably shallow, providing little-to-no extra information on either the book or its characters.
