Hello Cairo!

The weather is cooling down, the academic year has begun and weekends are starting to come back to the city; autumn is well on its way. Although these days more precautions are encouraged while scouring the city, it’s still no reason not to take advantage of the many great events our good ol’ Cairo has in store.

This Thursday has an eclectic range of music with the Riff Band playing a number of Broadway tunes at Cairo Jazz Club, two performances of smouldering jazz are promised with Michelle Rounds at Kempinksi Nile’s jazz bar and Ahmed Hafroush at Fairmont Nile City’s Saigon restaurant. Adding more genres to the mix, El Sawy Culturewheel hosts rappers, Soot El Share3, and black metal enthusiasts, Dark Philosophy, while Cairo Opera House offers some classical Arabic music with the National Arab Ensemble.

Still fresh to the art scene are the ‘Bearing Witness’ exhibition at Medrar, which is a collection by various artists and Minas Farouk Mina’s ‘Unloaded’ exhibition at Cala, which launched to high praises. Also recently launched is ‘A Picture and a Book’ by award-winning Sahar Abdallah, showing at Mashrabia Gallery.

On Friday DJ Ahmed Shawky picks up the pace at Cairo Jazz Club while non-alcoholic Jazz Mate lends its stage to writer and composer Adam Miller. For more jazziness, Michelle Rounds and Ahmed Hafroush give another performance this evening in their respective locations. For contemporary music, you can catch the Munich Percussion Ensemble playing at Cairo Opera House.

You can also wind down with a poetic evening led by activist and poet Ahmed Abdel Rahman at El Sawy Culturewheel, or sit back and enjoy the 1978 Bergman classic ‘Autumn Sonata’, which will screen at Sufi.

The music returns one last time this weekend with several performances on Saturday. Rawabet Theatre presents a live electronic session and album release with Rami Abadir and Dijit. Alternative rock band, Transistor, plays before Salalem takes to the stage at Cairo Jazz Club, while Uss w Laz2 will play their original tracks at El Sawy Culturewheel.

The weeklong screening of ‘The Seven Billionth Citizen’ at Townhouse is almost drawing to an end, but Saturday also sees the start of ‘Aquarelle’ exhibition by Mohamed El Nasser at Cordoba Gallery. For one night only you can join Coucla Refaat for a Q&A at the book signing of her new book ‘Dance of Life’, taking place at Photopia.

So there you have it Cairo, our weekly wrap-up of the best events coming your way on this very lovely weekend. Have a happy one!
