With Ramadan almost coming to an end, the excitement of Eid is in the air. But before we get ahead of ourselves, we can't help but wish some of Cairo's restaurants did fetar all year round. Having spent Ramadan scouring the city these past few weeks, we have compiled a list of the best spots to break your fast while you still have the chance.
When we made our way to Ayadina in Heliopolis, the interior's fuchsia and aquamarine hues seemed promising, and in the end our experience was nothing short of perfection. An impressively large and extensive all-inclusive buffet came at a reasonable price, and just as importantly, we found their service to be impeccable – even during the initial fetar-time rush.
We had high hopes for Tamara considering past experiences, and indeed, we weren't disappointed. Making our way to the Citystars branch, the serene white-washed and colourful interior makes for a lovely setting. While the portions were quite big and difficult to finish, the quality and the flavours the food leaves this restaurant high on our list.
Offering great value for money, this Nile-side restaurant in Zamalek proved to be another success on our fetar adventures. A set menu is suitable for four people to share and includes a wide variety of starters, main dishes and desserts to choose from. While we found the main dishes to be generous, sadly the dessert portions were less so.
An oldtime local favourite, Abou El Sid is one of the few restaurants that has managed to continually impress and satisfy diners. Heading to their Zamalek branch for fetar, the restaurant's already heavy Oriental mood lended itself perfectly to a quintessential Ramadan experience. But what it really boiled down to is the excellent quality of the dishes; from mezzas and mains to drinks and desserts.
For all you Maadi residents out there, we have something for you too. Launching this Ramadan, El Balad seems to be off to a good start. Serving complimentary drinks to start, the efficient service, within a spacious relaxing atmosphere, added to the overall success of the meal. We would highly recommend trying their halawa and ice cream dessert.
