Fist Fight: Low-Blows All Round in Crude, Silly Comedy

Despite an abundance of genital-based humour and slapstick violence, R-rated odd couple comedy, Fist Fight, isn’t a total flop. But even with it being occasionally entertaining thanks to its two leads and some humorous dialogue exchanges, its all rather foolish and forgettable.

It’s the last day of the school year at Roosevelt High School and the students mark the occasion by pulling a number of elaborate pranks on their rather helpless educators. Kind-hearted English teacher, Andy Campbell (Day) is doing everything he can to keep his head down and stay under the radar, keeping his fingers crossed that he will still have a job to come back to after the much-feared administrative review that is just around the corner.

After witnessing his colleague, history teacher and a feverish-authoritarian Strickland (Cube), demonstrating a rather violent stand against one of his students, Andy is soon put in the hot seat when questioned about the incident by Principal Richard Tyler (Norris) who threatens Andy with an immediate dismissal if he doesn’t fess up.

Left with no choice, Andy speaks the truth and Strickland is fired.  Jobless and angry, Strickland – a man known for his physical strength and angry outbursts – decides that the only way he is to settle his differences with Andy is to challenge him to a fist fight in the school’s parking lot after the final bell. Completely freaked out by the prospect, Andy soon turns to others for help, hoping that he will be able to come up with a plan to come out of the fight alive.

In terms of story, Fist Fight is not exactly what you might call an intelligent or meaningful endeavour. Penned by Van Robichaux and Evan Susser, the world that exists within the halls of Roosevelt High is completely and utterly absurd with the students doing absolutely everything they can to wreak havoc for the sake of it, while the teachers have no choice but to simply admit defeat.n Everything seems to revolve around sex and the movie’s R-rating is exploited to the maximum – also, seemingly, just for the sake of it.

However, despite all of the negatives, Fist Fight is not a total loss, with both Ice Cube and Charlie Day offering plenty of chemistry to their odd couple pairing to sell the jokes and keep Fist Fight from being a complete dud.
