This week sees the release of some highly anticipated films: the video game adaptation of Tomb Raider, the star-studded feature Gringo, and finally, the thriller Hostile.

Tomb Raider

What’s it about? Tomb Raider’s story revolves around Lara Croft; the daughter of an archaeologist who dies, leaving his daughter on a quest to prevent a sinister organization called The Trinity from endangering the world.

The good: Alicia Vikander looks the part and, from the trailers, the film seems to be an incredibly faithful video game adaptation.

The bad: Video game adaptations are cursed; they are often poorly made, with cheap productions and weak directorial efforts. Here’s hoping this film breaks the mold.

Gringo

What’s it about? The directorial debut of Nash Edgerton, is about an everyday business man (David Oyelowo) who finds himself in a debacle of epic proportions, after striking a business deal with a criminal organization.

The good: The film stars Charlize Theron, Joel Edgerton, David Oyelowo, and so many more, so we expect some great acting.

The bad: The story line looks as re-hashed as ever.

Hostile

What’s it about? Hostile follows a young adult fending off against a horde of vicious creatures, against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic era.

The good: From the trailers, the film seems to be filled with great action sequences, and suspense.

The bad: The plot line is extremely basic, and offers nothing new.
