Since its establishment in 1891, the Giza Zoo has extended beyond entertainment purposes. For over a century, the zoo has been a stable home for generations of animals, ancient trees, and rare plants. It has also played a major part in all of our childhoods. The Giza Zoo has always perfectly blended history and natural magnificence.
However, it was enclosed in July of 2023 to embark on a major transformational journey of development and modernisation. This development plan has already been in motion, under the supervision of world experts and following global standards to transform animal care and maintenance procedures.
The Giza Zoo and the Orman Botanical Garden are set to reopen for visitors this September with a modern, sustainable vision that combines entertainment and environmental preservation. Much effort and consideration have been paid to preserve the history and heritage of the Giza Zoo and keep this Egyptian heritage intact.

These improvements will enable the zoo to offer much more than a regular zoo experience. The Giza Zoo will provide an immersive and integrated experience suitable for people of all ages, making it a fantastic day out for the whole family.
For the first time in Egypt, the Giza Zoo is set to include new and rare animal species and entertain live shows with sea lions, elephants, and birds. The zoo will also feature a glass dome for viewing animals like lemurs and meerkats. There will be specified engaging activities for children, like animal feeding and guided tours by the animal keepers.
The Giza Zoo will also contain a gift shop of handmade items, a few restaurants and cafes amidst nature, and the Safari Glamping Hotel, which is said to blend a comprehensive entertainment experience and revel in the beauty of wild nature.
There will also be renovations to the existing zoo landmarks, including the passages, the Suspension Bridge, the Japanese Kiosk, and the Haramlik Palace. These renovations are essential for preserving the intricate details by which the Giza Zoo was designed and created. Each bit of the Giza Zoo was built with deep love and consideration for Egypt and architectural art.

For the first time in Greater Cairo, 112 acres of wild nature will be open for the public in September. This will be achieved by connecting the gardens of the Giza Zoo and the Orman through a tunnel. This developmental process will create the biggest green space ever in Greater Cairo. The gardens will become home to over 3000 ancient trees and 186 species of animals, birds, or reptiles.
Moreover, the Orman Botanical Garden is also already in its development phase. The Orman Garden is set to include a modern water tank, new greenhouses, and a special lake for rare lotus flowers. Within these technological developments, a QR code will be added to each tree to contain a digital page of the tree’s info, history, and state.

The scale of this development shows in PAAZA’s country choice for The Pan African Zoo Congress; the Pan-African Association of Zoos and Aquaria has chosen Egypt for the first time to host its annual zoo conference in 2025, which marks a new chapter for the Giza Zoo and restores its former glory.
