With the anniversary of his passing drawing near, Abdel Halim Hafez continues to be fondly remembered by all Egyptians. Known as Al Andaleeb El Asmar, or the dark nightingale, Hafez was a celebrated Egyptian singer and actor who captured the hearts of many. Even today, as March 30th approaches, marking the 47th anniversary of his passing, Hafez’s legacy is revitalised as fans from across the MENA region gather to visit his home, which opens its doors to visitors on this solemn day each year.

Currently taken care of by the beloved actor and director Kamal El Shenawy’s son, who lives in the same building, Abdel Halim’s flat is open for the public to visit without tickets or entry fees. The house is located in the Zahraa Al Gezira building in Zamalek.

As you approach the flat, you will notice notes written by the renowned singer’s fans on the walls leading to the front door, expressing their adoration for him and his music. The gate to Hafez’s home is a time machine that takes you back to the sixties. As you hold the doorknob, you will feel your vision turning black and white as you slip into a wave of nostalgia. The house is full of portraits of the artist as well as his personal belongings, including his piano and gramophone. Additionally, the location is immensely influenced by French décor that shines with elegance and romance, matching the identity of the legend as we know him.

Inside the house, every detail is preserved, offering glimpses into Abdel Halim’s life. On the headboard of his bed, you can still discern the spot where his head would rest, a bare patch with peeled paint, serving as a reminder of his presence.

Moreover, the living room holds a special allure for visitors. It was here that he would spend nights with friends, poets, and composers, brainstorming and crafting the timeless melodies that we all love and cherish. Additionally, the living room showcases numerous cupboards displaying medals and honours bestowed upon him by Egyptian presidents, as well as heads of state and monarchs from various countries, along with the awards he received throughout his illustrious career, making the living room a small Abdel Halim museum that should not be missed.
