“I would like to thank my God. Allahuakbar. Thank you, God,” said American-Egyptian actor, Ramy Youssef during his acceptance speech for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy at the 77th Golden Globes. His award was for his performance in the Hulu series, Ramy, in which he plays the title character.

His win marks a milestone for the Muslim community in America, and the phrase Allahuakbar is no longer associated with violence, but coexistence and gratitude, due to his touching speech. American actresses, Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston presented the award.

Youssef not only stars in Ramy, but he also directs, writes, and produces the show. The series follows a young man named Ramy Hassan, who lives in a politically-divided New Jersey neighbourhood. Being an Arab Muslim, Hassan struggles with his moral compass, as he finds himself surrounded by the contrast of his American-Egyptian community, and a carefree millennial generation.

Youssef beat out fellow nominees, Paul Rudd (Living with Yourself) and Michael Douglas (The Kominsky Method) in the category. Unfortunately, Rami Malek lost out on a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama to Brian Cox (Succession).
