After being postponed during the peak of the pandemic, the Aswan International Women Film Festival (AIWFF) is finally taking place this June. The AIWFF is an event aimed at highlighting the greatest women in Arab cinema and their works. The event holds a variety of workshops for creative youths aimed at training them to become filmmakers.

Last year, over 125 young individuals attended workshops by Egyptian and foreign filmmakers, teaching them the art of filmmaking. The festival resulted in the making of six films by different participants, all done with the help of screenwriter Wissam Soliman and director Nadine Salib.

This year, for its 5th edition, the AIWFF will bring together various filmmakers and popular Egyptian celebrities to celebrate and teach film. The festival will also present participants with a multitude of awards, all dedicated to Arab female filmmakers. These awards include The Nabiha Lotfy Award for Best Short Film, The Ateyyat El Abnoudy Award for Best Director, and The Special Jury Nahed Nasrallah Award. You can find out more about the brilliant women after whom the awards were named on the event’s Facebook.

The event is organised under the auspices of the European Union in Egypt and the EUNIC with support from the National Council for Women, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Tourism, and the ACT Foundation. It is set to take place in the Aswan governorate from 24th to the 29th of June.
