Cairo Reimagined: An Art Movement in the Making?

Cairo Reimagined: An Art Movement in the Making?

It all started when we had to take a long-distance travel across our beloved Cairo. With every twist, turn and bend of the winding roads, comes such a quick change of scenery that one can’t help but wonder if there is a modern Darwin to discover a rhyme or reason for Cairo’s chaotically diverse aesthetic.

Meditating on that thought, we were met by several gigantic billboards that read ‘Cairo Reimagined’. As if waiting for a trigger, our minds overflowed with a stream of intangible pictures of what Cairo would look alike in a parallel universe.

We decided to follow the clue and see where typing Cairo Reimagined in Facebook’s search bar would lead us – and what we found is an artistic campaign in the making. We’re not even sure if the word campaign is even right here, perhaps an initiative is more befitting.

There you’ll find pictures and videos; creative revisits to famous locations in the city; from a re-coloured Talat Harb Square, to a view of the Nile that overlooks a modern, almost futuristic skyline of Cairo.

The posts are credited to different people; maybe the creative minds of Cairo who have shared their visions to redefine Cairo. Some are re-imagining the city through graphic design, whereas other use the power of illustrations to show us their vision of the millennium old city while others have chosen more abstract mediums such as photography to give us their own glimpse of a Cairo reimagined.

Still, there’s no clear direction to where this is going, but we know well that big changes start with an idea; and we’re all for an artistically reimagined Cairo.
