“Edible Aesthetics” by Film My Design Take Over Cairo Design Week

To all the culinary art enthusiasts, don’t miss out on Film My Design’s programme at Cairo Design Week! The “Edible Aesthetics” programme, curated by Salma Serry, a food studies researcher and founder of Sufra Archive, is taking place from the 28th of February to March 2nd and is powered by USAID. The programme features a selection of film screenings, panel discussions, and a workshop series that explores the relationship between culinary art and design. The programme is curated to highlight the power of food beyond its primary purpose and create an aesthetic experience out of it. The event offers a deep understanding of textures, colours, and food products. “Edible Aesthetics” is curated to delight all the foodies and camera enthusiasts out there.

 

February 28:

Starting on the 28th of February, the first day includes a film screening and opening talk by Omar Sartawi. Sartawi is a renowned food artist known for his comprehensive culinary experience. Screening the documentary Food & Design will indulge all the attendees in diverse culinary experiences from around the world and feature multiple interviews with culinary figures, kick-starting the event with an embrace of diversity and an inclusive foodie experience.

 

February 29:

The 29th of February will feature another film screening and a panel not to be missed discussing the Egyptian culinary scene and its correlation with art. The 2018 documentary film Before the Plate will be screened, after which the Egyptian Taste: Between Innovation & Tradition panel discussion will delve into how culinary sensations preserve tradition as they embrace new techniques and innovative presentations.

 

March 1 & 2:

March 1st will feature another film screening, this time for the American film For Grace, which will be followed by a panel discussion for all filmmakers and enthusiasts tackling food in film. Under the title of “Culinary Creativity On Set: Designing Food in Film & Photography”, the panel is expected to shed light on culinary creations and cinematic food experiences.

The event will also feature a workshop on the first and second of March with the aim of merging food and design under the title of “Deconstructing Koshary”. The workshop will involve design thinking in the kitchen and feature multiple approaches perfect for both foodies and camera enthusiasts.

The event will take place between Cinema Radio for the screenings and discussions, and the Downtown Cairo coworking space Consoleya for the workshop.
