Egypt has officially introduced a new cultural tradition. Minister of Culture Dr Ahmed Fouad Heno announced that September 15 will be recognised every year as Egypt’s National Music Day in honour of the late musician Sayed Darwish. The date is now part of the country’s cultural calendar, shining a spotlight on music as a defining element of Egyptian life and heritage, and keeping one of Egypt’s musical icons alive for generations to come.

From Farewell to Legacy

The chosen date is no coincidence. It marks the anniversary of the passing of Sayed Darwish. Sayed Darwish is one of Egypt’s musical icons who revolutionised Egyptian music with his melodies and created a legacy that still resonates today. Known as the musician of the people, instead of remembering the day as one of loss, it is now transformed into a celebration of creativity, honouring the power of music as an essential part of national identity, as he always believed.

Turning a Day into a Celebration Across Egypt

National Music Day will carry meaning beyond its name. The day will be celebrated with concerts, performances, and cultural activities held across different governorates, inviting people from all backgrounds to join in honouring Egypt’s musical journey.

The National Centre for Theatre, Music, and Folk Arts, led by director Adel Hassan, has been entrusted with organising the festivities under the supervision of the Cultural Production Sector. The celebration will involve all cultural sectors, creating a programme that reflects the full spectrum of Egyptian music, from classical and folk traditions to contemporary expressions by rising artists.

A Voice to the Nation and Honours to the Legends

One of the highlights of the celebration will be an annual address delivered by a leading music figure, similar to the global tradition of World Theatre Day, offering a message to the people through art. Alongside this, a selection of influential musicians and artists who shaped Egypt’s musical history will be honoured for their timeless contributions.

Safeguarding Memories, Inspiring the Future

Since its founding in 1980, the National Centre for Theatre, Music, and Folk Arts has played a vital role in safeguarding Egypt’s artistic heritage. Beyond documenting and archiving history, it also produces creative programmes that connect generations. By offering a stage for new talents while honouring the past, the centre will ensure that National Music Day becomes more than symbolic; it will become a bridge between memory and future.

More Than Entertainment: Music as Egypt’s Identity

National Music Day is poised to become a tradition that redefines how Egyptians perceive music in their daily lives. It highlights that music is not only entertainment but also a powerful tool for cultural awareness and a cornerstone of Egypt’s collective identity. With each year, the celebration will remind people of the deeper role music plays in shaping who we are.
