Egypt is gearing up for one of its most significant cultural moments yet, the official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum this November. Final touches are now underway, with most of the main construction and interior work completed. From simulations of the Nile and solar boats to Tutankhamun’s treasures, here is everything you need to know about the Grand Egyptian Museum.

Treasures of Tutankhamun Await

A source told Cairo360 that the display cases are ready, including those for the legendary King Tutankhamun’s gallery. The only significant items still to be transported are his golden mask, royal throne, and golden coffin, though the exact transfer date has not yet been set.

Solar Boats and Nile Simulation Completed

Work has also wrapped up on the Solar Boat Museum, the surrounding landscape, and a striking Nile simulation that greets visitors in front of the reconstructed vessel. What remains are only minor details like lighting adjustments.

A Museum of Global Scale

The Grand Egyptian Museum covers over 300,000 square meters, with exhibition halls larger than some entire museums elsewhere in Egypt and abroad. The sheer size of the building makes it a cultural landmark in itself.

This museum isn’t just a home for artefacts; it’s a national project showcasing thousands of unique pieces. For the first time since the discovery of his tomb in 1922, Tutankhamun’s complete treasure collection will be on display together. Visitors can also explore the artefacts of Queen Hetepheres, mother of King Khufu, the Solar Boats of Khufu, and objects spanning from pre-dynastic times to the Greek and Roman periods.

GEM Beyond the Galleries

The Grand Egyptian Museum also features cultural activity spaces, a dedicated children’s museum, an educational centre, a cinema, conference halls, and shopping areas with stores, cafés, and restaurants. With expansive gardens that enhance the experience, it offers visitors more to enjoy beyond the exhibits.

Equipped with the latest museum display technologies, the museum integrates digital documentation systems, conservation facilities, and continuous restoration programmes. It is designed to be a complete experience, ensuring the Grand Egyptian Museum becomes a world-class destination worth visiting again and again.
