The Egyptian Animation Society and Cultural Development Fund are co-organising the 13th edition of Cairo International Animation Forum (CIAF) under the supervision of the festival’s head, Rashida El Shafei, and Minister of Culture, Enas Abdel-Dayem. The CIAF will run from the 27th of February to the 5th of March, under the title of “The Egyptian-Russian Year”. Competitions include feature films, short films, and experimental creativity, and awards will be presented for the best movie idea, script, music, scenography, and character designs.

According to Masrawy, the committee received 450 entries, that were then funnelled down to 230, including 11 long films, that are set to participate in CIAF’s upcoming session. The participating films are from esteemed institutions, colleges, studios, production companies, and agencies from 52 countries around the globe.

“The festival started out as an Egyptian event, then transformed into an Arab event, and then an international one. We have 12 years of experience, and the opening of this session will take place in Metro Cinema, and then it will take over Renaissance Cinema, Russian Cultural Centre, Manial Innovation Centre, and Cinema Culture Centre,” said Head of CIAF, El Shafei.

Along with screenings of animated films, the festival will exhibit drawings and production accessories, and it will hold seminars and workshops featuring pioneers in the field. The festival aims to draw attention to the importance of animation art, exchange experience, and support the collaboration between Egypt and other countries. It will also open up new markets for producers to showcase their work and discuss ideas.

On that note, the festival will be giving out a grant of 50,000 EGP to produce an animation film not shorter than two minutes. According to Ahram Gate, the applicant must not be older than 40 years old, and a detailed budget must be attached to the project, along with its script, artistic designs, and a storyboard.
