In a notoriously competitive industry, millions of musicians constantly strive to gain even a little bit of exposure. While there is absolutely no linear path towards becoming a musician, there are a few things musicians can do to garner results. For Egyptian musicians, specifically bands, the Battle of the Bands has been a significant contributor to several musicians’ rise to stardom! This year’s edition was certainly no exception, so here’s a quick recap of it!

The 2024 edition happened on the 25th and 26th of April, where each day featured different bands from diverse genres, giving all musicians a chance to celebrate and showcase their talents. A homely, hospitable spot, El Gezira Sporting Club in Zamalek warmly welcomed The Battle of the Bands this year. With an ideal, accessible spot like this, it was only natural that A LOT of musicians—and even non-musicians—would attend.

Organised by the best of the best, Bandmakers Music Academy, and sponsored by the cream of the crop, including Trinity College London and Butcher’s Burger, The Battle of the Bands 2024 was nothing short of legendary.

The Battle of the Bands 2024 ensured fair, accurate judgement by gathering multiple esteemed professionals in one event. From the Ukrainian pianist Elena Gerchenko and the German choirmaster Gesa Hoepner to the Egyptian producer, composer, and pianist Fathy Salama and the iconic Egyptian composer and music arranger Hany Shenouda, the judges at this year’s event were unlike any other. 

 

Competing Bands

From rock bands to school choirs, the battle was intense, filled to the brim with energy, anticipation, and talent! Among the contenders were independent bands, such as Captain Robin, Leil Band, Ritmo Band, and Stage 5, and rock bands like Bananas On Fire and Semsema, the MES band, and the Royal Rock Band.

 

Winners

Considering the various styles and genres that partook in the battle, the battle was divided into different sub-battles, with a winning band for each one. In the Independent Bands Competition, Captain Robin’s surreal performance secured them the top spot. Meanwhile, the Rock Bands Competition saw the remarkable Bananas On Fire and Semsema emerge victorious. The soothing melodies of Golden Fingers Orchestra won the Big Band Competition. Finally, the NAVA Kids Pop Choir came in first in the Choir Competition.

 

Guest Performance

More than just a “battle”, the Battle of the Bands captivated everyone with a guest performance. The renowned pop band El Masryeen took centre stage during the event, which left everyone in awe and nostalgic.
