A century-old story in Downtown lies in the bustle of Naguib Al Rihani Street, a story that’s been alive for more than 90 years. “Al-Baqala Al-Falasteenia” (The Palestinian Grocery) isn’t just a neighbourhood store; it’s the legacy of a Palestinian family that began in Jerusalem and found its home in Cairo, keeping the same authentic taste and quality alive across generations. From its wooden storefront sign to the vintage slicing machine, every corner whispers history seasoned with unforgettable flavour.

A Corner of Old Cairo

Every now and then, we find ourselves yearning for the old-world charm of Khedival and Fatimid Cairo. This time, the journey took us deep into Downtown, where “The Palestinian Grocery” has stood as a timeless witness to nearly a century of life in the capital. Step inside, and you’ll instantly feel the nostalgia. The dark wooden shelves, the old-school display counter, and even the way bills are tallied by hand all take you back in time. Paper bags still carry the classic inscription: “The Palestinian Grocery – Managed by Hajj Hashem Badran.”

From Jerusalem to Cairo

The story began in 1905, when Mohamed Ali Badran arrived from Jerusalem’s Al-Gamaliya neighbourhood, selling Nabulsi soap. By 1934, he had opened his first grocery, and in 1954, the family moved to their current spot on Naguib Al Rihani Street. Since then, the store has been a destination for anyone craving authentic traditions and goods that never go out of style.

Flavours Worth Coming Back For

Here, you’ll find top-quality cheeses, basturma, and halawa that keep customers returning over and over. This is some of the best rumi cheese and basturma you’ll find in Egypt. Prices are straightforward: basturma at EGP 720/kg, rumi cheese at EGP 360/kg, and white cheese at EGP 220/kg.

Family Legacy, Living Heritage

Today, the shop is run by Engineer Ali Hashem, grandson of the founder, who sees the grocery not just as a livelihood but as a piece of family identity. This bridge continues to connect Cairo and Jerusalem through taste and tradition.
