“Africa is the next development frontier, and the youth will be the main drivers of our continent and our hope”, said Egypt’s Minister of Investment and International Cooperation, Sahar Nasr, during her speech at the 14th African Economic Conference (AEC). The conference took place in Sharm El Sheikh from the 2nd to the 4th of December, under the theme “Jobs, Entrepreneurship, and Capacity Development for African youth.”

The AEC featured over 350 stakeholders from across the globe, who joined business leaders, policymakers, and media entities to discuss sustainable development in the region, according to Daily News and State Information Service. It was organised by the African Development Bank, the United Nations Economic Commissions for Africa, and the United Nations Development Programme.

The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) Governor, Tarek Amer, spoke about the rocketing unemployment rates, and how the challenges can be overcome with smarter economic strategies. According to Africa News, the Jobs for Youth Strategy is set to provide 25 million jobs to young people across Africa by 2025, as well as help 50 million acquire skills that will elevate their employment possibilities.

Development partners should be working closely with the government to aid young entrepreneurs on their quest towards successfully implementing innovative concepts. Discussions and positive initiatives that arise during conferences like the AEC are the only way that poverty and unemployment can be eradicated. We hope the future is a little brighter after this round of the AEC.
