We’re a month into 2021, and the Coronavirus is still here. Reflecting on how far we’ve come, we decided to round up all the updates of this month. Please maintain safety precautions, social distance, and abide by the government health guidelines when you’re out and about.
2nd of January
At the beginning of the year, the Health Ministry released a statement that 1,409 new Coronavirus cases had been detected, upping the total number of confirmed cases at the time to 139,471.
Meanwhile, The Egyptian Cabinet spokesperson, Nader Saad, announced that Egypt was negotiating with Pfizer and AstraZeneca to obtain batches of the Coronavirus vaccine, in addition to those of China’s Sinopharm.
3rd of January
Egyptian authorities applied a 50 LE fine for people who fail to wear a mask while riding public transportation or in enclosed spaces. Not only did the authorities enforce a fee, but they also threatened to arrest those not abiding by the regulations.
7th of January
The Long Live Egypt Fund launched an initiative to provide low-income families, children, and senior citizens with Coronavirus vaccines at a cost of approximately 2 LE billion.
22nd of January
The number of Coronavirus cases dropped by 50% within a month, including those quarantining at home, according to the Minister of Health and Population, Hala Zayed.
27th of January
Minister of Health Hala Zayed stated that COVID-19 vaccines will be available to the public by booking through electronic registration systems. The categories of the first recipients of the vaccine include medical workers, the elderly, and critical cases.
30th of January
The Egyptian Authority for Unified Procurement, Medical Supply and Technology Management announced that the first shipment of the British Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine would arrive in Egypt on Sunday. The authority has reportedly contracted AstraZeneca to get 20 million shots of the vaccine.
The 31st of January
Based on data collected from WHO (World Health Organization), the total number of confirmed cases in Egypt is 165,418.
