The famed Alexandrian-born businessman, Mohamed Al Fayed, passed away on the 30th of August in London. According to Forbes Middle East’s annual list released in May, he was the fourth richest Egyptian and twelfth richest Arab.

On Friday, his family released a statement saying, “Mrs Mohamed Al Fayed, her children and grandchildren wish to confirm that her beloved husband, their father and their grandfather, Mohamed, has passed away peacefully of old age on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.”

Al Fayed was known for owning the British luxury department store Harrods between 1985 and 2010, Fulham Football Club until 2013, and the Paris Ritz from 1979 until his death. But the late businessman was probably most famous for having been the father of Dodi Al Fayed, who had a romantic relationship with Princess Diana and was killed with Lady D in the infamous road tunnel in Paris on the 31st of August, 1997. The patriarch passed away a day before the 26th anniversary of his son Dodi’s passing.

Having come from humble beginnings, Al Fayed built his fortune pursuing a career in real estate, shipping, and construction in Alexandria. But it was when he opened his London office in the 1960s that his business interests in the UK took off. He was even awarded the Légion D’Honneur, France’s most prestigious civilian award.
