Cairo Weekend Guide: Egyptian Project, PHCK, Black Theama & More…

This weekend is brimming with events of all kinds, all you need to do now is check them out and pick which one is your cup of tea. Here’s what’s going on in the city during the upcoming days:

Movie lovers are in for a treat this weekend with Zawya screening this year’s Oscar-nominated movies until the 26th of February. Thursday also brings other movie nights taking place across the city, including the screening of an Anwar Wagdy’s Egyptian classic Dahab at ADEF DECA, and Nadine Salib’s documentaryUm Ghayeb at KMT.

When it comes to music events,Mazameer El Nileplay a round of Egyptian folktunes at El Dammah Theater, while MondeDalida head to ROOM Art Space’s stage with some covers by Dalida. The night also sees Al Hezb El Comedy taking to the stage at Darb 1718 for a stand-up comedy show, while Georgia’s National Ballet Company takes to stage at Cairo Opera House’s Main Hall, for a performance called Fire of Georgia.

Elsewhere, DJ Ghandoukly plays a round of pop hits at The Tap East, DJunkie spins some groovy beats at The Tap West, while it’s all about hip-hop and R&B at The Tap Maadi where DJ Mobbz takes to decks. Cairo Jazz Club 610 hosts a massive electronic night that brings a lineup of Fulltone, PHCK, and El Mundo.

On Friday, Amr Diab takes to the stage at Misr University for Science and Technology, Asala sings some hits at Al Manara International Conferences Center, while Black Theama returns to El SawyCulture Wheel with a performance on River Hall’s stage. The venue also sees a Sufi night courtesy of Mahmoud El Tohamy, but at Wisdom Hall, while ROOM Art Space welcomes Insjam for a jazz night.

Alternatively, The Tap Maadi hosts a night of guilty-pleasure tunes called 90’s Cheeseballs, while it’s a deep/tech house night at The Tap East, where Minus T hits the decks, and at Cairo Jazz Club too, but with Sebbz, and Shiha in charge of the music. Meanwhile, at Cairo Jazz 610, this edition of Disco Hamra features local duo Disco Masr, as well as DJ A.K.

Saturday begins with a Jazz night at ROOM Art Space, where local band NohaFekry Quartet are on the menu, an Oriental fusion night at El Sawy Culture Wheel’s River Hall, where Egyptian Project take to the stage, and a classical night at Cairo Opera House, where the orchestra play a round of pieces byAmerican composers.

When the night grows older, DJ Ahmed Samy plays a round of electronic tunes at The Tap Maadi; the same genre that Noubi/ Nubia, and ABD are playing at The Tap West, while DJ Kashouty plays some pop hits at The Tap East. Cairo Jazz Club seals the weekend with a contemporary Arabic music night, courtesy of Fadwa, and El Dor El Awal.
