The Definitive Guide to Living in the Capital , Cairo , Egypt

The week is almost over, take a break from whatever you are doing right now, and check out the many options that Cairo has for the weekend. No matter what your cup of tea is, you’ll always find a thing or two that matches your taste in this city. Here’s what’s going on during the weekend:

Thursday begins with a ballet performance entitled Cleopatra at Cairo Opera House’s Main Hall, the venue’s Small Hall hosts a jazz night, courtesy of Egyptian drummer Yehia Khalil, while it’s a folk music night at El Dammah Theater, where Darawish Aboul Gheit take to the stage. Meanwhile, ROOM Art Space Garden City welcomes Aly Eissa Trio for an Oriental night of music, while Darb 1718 serves an open-mic/stand-up comedy show.

The day also sees the opening of Shnit Worldwide Shortfilmfestival’s 7th edition, where a round of local and international shorts are set to be screened at Downtown’s Zawya, and KMT in maadi. The festival takes place until the 20^th of October.

When we delve deeper into the night, The Tap West brings another edition of Cheeseballs, DJ Doggy Dogg spins a round of R&B and hip-hop tunes at The Tap Maadi, while Cairo Jazz Club 610’s Electric Night welcomes DJs, Dou, and Oriol Calvo, to take to the decks. Elsewhere, Cairo Jazz Club commences the second edition of Wall of Sound with a lineup of DJ Juno, Mmmalak, as well as Swedish musician Molly Nilsson.

As for Friday, ROOM Art Space Garden City hosts a night, courtesy of The Sinatras, who take to the stage to pay homage to Frankie, Darb 1718 sees Pink Floyd tribute band Paranoid Eyes covering some classics, while El Sawy Culturewheel hosts a stand-up comedy show, where Ali Qandeel takes to the stage.

Classic movies lovers are in for a treat, for Zawya is celebrating Ihsan Abdel Quddous with a retrospective, screening some of Egypt’s cinematic adaptations of his works. Ihsan Abdel Quddous Retrospective lasts until the 1^st of November.

Elsewhere, Sharmoofers take over the stage at The Tap West, on a night that also see DJ AK spinning R&B and hip-hop tunes, DJs Moenes, Aly Goede, and Ashmawy are on the menu on Cairo Jazz Club’s house night, while Mr. Arafa takes to the decks at The Tap East. It’s a rock night at The Tap Maadi, where Blitz take to the stage for a round of songs, while it’s all about 90’s hits, courtesy of Bubblegum Kollectiv at Cairo jazz Club 610.

When Saturday comes, Yellow Umbrella hosts a garage sale entitled Oldiscool, Cairo Symphony Orchestra takes to the pit at the Main Hall to play Johannes Brahms’ famous requiem, Ein Deutsches, while Janan take to the stage at Darb 1718 for a round of pop/rock songs. ROOM Art Space sees Ahmed Harfoush and his band taking to the stage to cover a host of jazz classics by Nat King Cole.

Another tribute night takes place in the city, but at The Tap East this time around, where local band Strawberry Swing takes to the stage to cover songs by Coldplay. But it’s a whole different vibe at Cairo Jazz Club, where Maryam Saleh sings various contemporary tunes, and at The Tap West, where Spade of Hearts play some jazz, putting an end to the weekend.
