The Definitive Guide to Living in the Capital , Cairo , Egypt

It’s been one hell of a week – the weather and the hangover of the long Eid holiday have done us no favours over the last few days, but there’s a hope on the horizon called the weekend and it’s shaping up to be a big one.

One of the biggest gigs of the weekend is set to take place on Thursday at Cairo Jazz Club, where the increasingly popular and just generally very cool Sharmoofers take to the stage. Elsewhere, mult-discipline festival, Masãfãt, continues at Downtown's Sherazade, with Gaika, Lafawndah, Sami Baha and Dawsha Music set to perform.

Elsewhere, funk and rock cover band, Crash Boom Bang, perform at the Tap East, while Pach Sharm resident, Ouzo, is the man in charge of the music at the Tap Maadi alongside Mr Arafa.

Music of the electronic kind can also be found at the Garden Nile Front, where DJ Fuzzy kicks off the weekend at the Manial bar. Elsewhere, Salalem take to the stage at After Eight, Nesma jiggles her way through the night at Hakamoro in Heliopolis and Sufi-inspired group, Trio Karkade, take to the stage at Zamalek’s 3elbt Alwan, while the unique Kiki Band come all the way from Japan to Cairo Opera House.

There’s plenty to see and do on Friday, too, with Masãfãt moving to Darb 1718 for two film screenings. Elsewhere, the night’s entertainment at Cairo Jazz Club comes courtesy of progressive house favourite, DJ Mohasseb, while the Tap Maadi welcomes rockabilly group, the Cadillacs, and the Tap East hosts a night of hip-hop with DJ Fat Sam.

Elsewhere, Basheer performs at After Eight, Oriental rock band, Code Masr, performs at 3elbt Alwan, and jazz is on the menu at Garden City’s ROOM Art Space, where Noha Fekry, Amro Salah and Ihab Badr team up.

Saturday is usually a little dead, but Cairo is wending the weekend in style this time round. The day begins with Carnevale – an all-day event at Zamalek’s Aquarium Grotto Garden that will bring together food, drink, entertainment and much more all under one proverbial roof.

Later in the day, the endlessly popular Cairokee perform not one, but two gigs at El Sawy Culturewheel, at 4PM and 7.30PM. There’s more live music over at El Genaina Theater, meanwhile, with acclaimed Palestinian singer-songwriter, Tamer Abu Ghazaleh, set to take to the stage on a night that will also see Jordanian band, Random House, perform.

Elsewhere, Shady Ahmed winds down the weekend down at the Tap Maadi and DJ Sewwes does likewise with his old school disco hits at the Tap East, while Cairo Jazz Club hosts a double header of live music with Wust El Balad and Bahiyya.

On a separate note, the Cairo International Festival for Contemporary & Experimental Theatre kicks off this week at Cairo Opera House and is set to continue till September 30th.
