Cairo Weekend Guide: Panorama of the European Film, Back 2 Basics Returns & More!

Hello Cairo! We’re ahead of an impressively eventful weekend that is sure to keep everyone happy. Apart of the usual music events, screenings and game nights, this weekend sees 3 different festival happening across the city; the 10th round of the annual film festival, Panorama of the European Film; the third version of world music festival, Wanas, at the Greek Campus; Darb 1718’s first edition of Cairographie, where Egypt’s most talented photographer showcase their works.

Alternatively, Thursday begins with an open-mic night at Garden City’s ROOM Art Space, where everybody is welcome to set their talents free, local Arabic rock band, Ka’b Dayer, take to the stage of Dokki’s DA HOUSE and Nour Harkati & Aytma take to that of Azhar Park’s El Genaina Theatre, before musical project, Sorour takes over.

When the night gets older, DJs Eighton, Ali & Dou, hit the decks of Korba’s 24K for a house night, while DJ Arrab, formerly known as Vega, takes to that of The Garden Nile, alongside Hussein Gamal, Azzam and Sheeko.  Another huge lineup heads to Cairo Jazz Club’s stage this night, which sees Polish band, Mountain Lakes, alongside Post-rock electronic Alexandrian trio, Telepoetic, and the one and only, NeoByrd, who will be playing some electronic tunes.

More electronic music comes, but this time at Maadi’s The Tap, which sees DJ Armen V, who hits the decks in the bar’s weekly Dance Grooves, while The Tap East serves a rock & roll night, with Screwdriver singing a number of covers.

Friday opens with a shopping bazaar, Winter Wonderland, at Downtown Katameya Mall, as well as The Osana Family Market at Maadi’s Osana Family Wellness. Later, legendary composer, Omar Khairat, presents a number of his classics at Uptown Cairo, while Sufi chanters, Waslet Sama’, takes to the stage of DA HOUSE and Pink Floyd cover band, Paranoid Eyes, takes to that of ROOM Art Space to play a variety of the band’s classic tunes.

On the other side of the musical spectrum, Djs Norsat, Misty and Gawdat take to decks at Cairo Jazz Club’s house night, Friday Fever, while Jimmy and Spanish imports, Edu Imbernon and Raxon, play back to back in this season’s first party of Back to Basics at Royal Maxim Palace Kempinski. And while The Tap Maadi sees an acoustic night with Hassan Ramzy and The F.A.M taking to the stage, The Tap East hosts a hip-hop night, where DJ A.K hits the decks for a round of tunes in Back to the Future.

As for Saturday, Gramaphone hosts a game night, ROOM Art Space welcomes Omar Kay to the stage to perform a variety of classic rock covers, while Darb 1718’s MazzikaXElSat7 sees Swiss band, SOAS Ceilidh, performing a variety of Irish and English traditional numbers, before local all-girls band, Bahgaga, takes over with their comical monologues.

The final hours of the weekend sees an r&b night, courtesy of Soul M at 24K, an Oriental night of music at Cairo Jazz Club, where local bands, Shahira Wel Nass El Khatira and Dokkan, take to the stage, while a rock and blues night at The Tap Maadi, with Bluenotes, taking over. Finally, The Tap East hosts an open-jam night, where everybody is welcome to flaunt their musical talents.
