Christmas in Cairo: Parties, Activities & Events in the City

The purported birth of baby Jesus may have been overshadowed by more pressing matters in Egypt this year, but that hasn’t stopped Cairenes from jumping headfirst into the Christmas festivities. As always, Cairo’s top venues have dusted off their plastic trees and shined their baubles for a round of kitschy celebrations.

We begin on Wednesday 19th at El Sawy Culturewheel where the Riff Band, fronted by Cairo crooner, Ahmed Harfoush, and the silky-voiced Noha Fikry, perform a special Christmas gig. Elsewhere, Art Café in Maadi is hosting a Children’s Christmas Party; the plan seems to be to get the little ones on a sugar high with some sweet Christmas treats before unleashing them on some arts and crafts projects.
The last weekend before Christmas sees classic Christmas entertainment at Cairo Opera House in the form of ‘The Nutcracker’. If you’re still yet to get into the Christmas spirit, the classic two-act ballet will sort that right out.

Ahmed Harfoush must love Christmas; Cairo’s own jazz connoisseur is set for a special Christmas performance at Fairmont Nile City – with a Christmas dress code. If you’re looking for some last minute presents or decoration ideas, Bikya’s Nasr City branch is holding a nifty Christmas Bazaar.

Speaking of which, pop-up intiative, Flea Market, will descend on the home furniture shopping haven that is Designopolis for a special Christmas Flea Market on Friday 21st. On the other side of the city, Downtown Katameya will host the Jingle Bells Bazaar. Meanwhile, more Christmas music comes in the form of Neveen Aluouba’s show at Cairo Opera House.

On Saturday 22nd, Maadi’s Cellar Door Bistro welcomes travelling culinary event, Chef’s Table Cairo, for a special seven-course Christmas meal, while First Mall’s day-long Christmas Event offers Cairene’s Christmas discounts, fashion shows, kids’ entertainment and more. If shopping and Christmas do indeed go hand-in-hand for you, department store, Beymen, is serving up kids’ activities and special Christmas treats. Elsewhere, the festively-named Bells Ensemble is set to perform a special Christmas show at Downtown Cairo’s El Gomhouria Theatre.

In Dokki, 1.2.3 Soleil has put together a festive program for the kiddies. There will be Christmas arts and crafts activities and crafts, ‘The Dinosaur Play’, Gingerbread making and even a special Santa appearance.

Sunday 23rd sees ‘The Nutcracker’ return to Cairo Opera House for another two-day stint. Things really pick up on Christmas Eve as DJ Misty & Hafez bring some festive cheer to Cairo Jazz Club – and some of the most hardcore vocal house music around at ‘Mistletoe & Mayhem’.

And then, of course, we have Christmas Day itself – there is no shortage of options. We’re back at Cairo Jazz Club for special Christmas charity event, ‘A Time of Giving’, where Beatles tribute band, Glass Onion, perform. All  proceeds will go to Canossa Vocational Centre.

Elsewhere, DJ Amir Megali hits Amici’s Heliopolis branch for special open-bar party, ‘Christmas Fever’, while O Bar’s ‘Sexy Christmas Party’ is bound to be a little bit saucy. Meanwhile, Cavallini in Heliopolis are pulling out the red carpet for Lebanese songstress, Maya Diab, whose performance forms the centerpiece for the loftily-named, ‘Beauty & Glamour Christmas Night’. That’s not all folks, because perennial part-troopers, Insomnia, are putting together massive Christmas bash, ‘Christmas Sensation’, at the lush Dusit Thani Lakeview hotel in New Cairo.

Not to be outdone, the peculiarly popular Tamarai  hosts a smorgasbord of entertainment at ‘Noël Encore’. For a decidedly more low-key Christmas Day, Resala Choir and the Little Princes perform at El Sawy Culturewheel.

This is just a snapshot of this year’s Christmas events in Cairo. Keep an eye on the Cairo 360 events calendar for more. Merry Christmas!
