Climate change has been an issue for decades and will only worsen in the future if we don’t take action now. COP27 (The 27th Annual Conference of The Parties) is considered one of the most important annual conferences to help with the rapid climate changes around us, and it will officially be taking place this year from November 6 to 18.

What is COP27, and Where is It Going to Be?

This year, COP27 is being hosted by Egypt for the first time in the resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh. Attendees will include country leaders, government officials, environmental activists, and representatives from society as well.

Since 1995, the UN Climate Change Conference has hosted a two-week summit to create a platform for world leaders, politicians, and environmental experts to discuss the climate crisis on a global scale.

This year, COP27 will tackle the results of changes that have been made since last year’s convention in Scotland. Participants this year will come up with a plan of action for the current climate crisis resulting from gas emissions, cutting down trees, overconsumption, and more.

What Are The Objectives?

There are three main objectives of this conference: mitigation, adaptation, and climate finance.

Mitigation is the reduction of the emission of greenhouse gasses by using new and renewable technologies and tools to prevent it. Then comes adaptation, where larger, more able countries could do more to save nations unable to cope with the climate change issue by having more resilient, sustainable plans.

Last but not least is climate finance, which is said to be the most important and significant topic presented in COP27, where more financially stable countries could help the countries who are struggling financially.

Who Can We Expect to See There?

Over 200 governments have been invited to this year’s event. One of the biggest announcements regarding COP27 this year is the attendance of US President Joe Biden. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will also join the UN climate conference this year, alongside more than 90 other heads of state.

Other people to watch include Sherry Rehman, Pakistan’s climate minister; US climate envoy John F. Kerry, who served as secretary of state under President Barack Obama; and Germany’s climate envoy, Jennifer Morgan.

Although many would expect to see her present at such an event, Swedish activist Greta Thunberg has opted out of COP27 after claiming that the event is being used by leaders and corporations as an opportunity for “greenwashing”.
