Every two years, the World Para Powerlifting Championships take place to determine who’s the best in the world of powerlifting for people with disabilities. First held in Sweden in 1994, the tournament hosts athletes with physical and sometimes intellectual disabilities. This round is held in Egypt.
The Time and Place
Hossam Al-Din Mostafa, the head of the Egyptian Paralympic Committee, announced the start of the championship earlier this month. The World Para Powerlifting Championship took place on the 9th and 10th of October, followed by the Elite event, which started on the 11th and will continue until the 18th of October. Both are in the Sport Hall of Olympic City in the New Administrative Capital.
Who Will Be Competing
Mostafa extended an invitation to all countries to participate in the championship, which currently has approximately 700 athletes from around 90 countries. The goal is to qualify the largest number of athletes in this round to prepare for the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
Egypt’s First Time Hosting
The Egyptian Paralympic Committee has organised five international championships in swimming and in powerlifting, but this is the first time it is hosting the World Para Powerlifting Championship, which showcases Egypt’s ability and readiness to host major sports events.
Format And Weight Classes
There are multiple categories for both men and women, and they vary depending on the Paralympics edition.
This year, the event is structured with a rookie and next-gen segment for young athletes, and it took place over two days, on the 9th and 10th of October.
Indeed, it’s an exhilarating time for Egypt and the entire para sports community worldwide. Best of luck to all the athletes participating.
