Google is known for updating its homepage with doodles that are dedicated to influential and inspirational individuals. Today, it celebrates the birthday of Mufidah Abdul Rahman, one of Egypt’s first female lawyers.

Abdul Rahman was born on this day in 1914, and, according to the National, she was the first female lawyer to present a case to the Court of Cassation in Egypt and the military court, and she also co-founded the National Feminist party.

During her membership of the feminist union, Bint Al Nil (Daughter of the Nile), she defended its leader, Doria Shafik, who marched with 1,500 women in 1951 demanding the right to vote. Women’s conditions did not experience vast improvements in the wake of the march, but Abdul Rahman continued her pursuit of feminist causes. Five years later, Egyptian women were granted the right to vote.
