The Faculty of Science at Cairo University is celebrating its hundredth anniversary. Opened in 1925 with Dr Ali Moustafa Mosharafa as its first dean, it was Egypt’s first-ever school of science, and for years it has carried the dream of advancing scientific research.

An Impressive Line of Alumni

This faculty has taken on students who have helped shape and evolve the field of scientific research worldwide, including, but not limited to, Dr Sameera Moussa, who was named “Miss Curie of the East”; Dr Mohamed Abdel Fattah Al-Kassas, a pioneer in the field of environmental sciences; and Dr Mostafa Tolba, who was a huge advocate for sustainable development.

The Museum of Entomology at Cairo University

One of the school’s most prominent landmarks is the Museum of Entomology. Opened in 1952, it was the first of its kind in the MENA region. To this day, it remains a vital knowledge hub.

The Vision

The school’s vision and goal for the future are to remain a pioneer in education and research, and to raise generations of scientists who will serve the community. It’s a noble goal from such a prestigious institution, something that inspires people to work hard for the future and to help build something great that lasts for generations.

The Journalistic Impact

In the name of celebration, the national body of journalism is also celebrating the faculty, led by the writer Ahmad Al-Muslimany. There will be lengthy reports about the faculty on Egyptian television, as well as an interview with the school’s dean, Dr Sohair Ramadan Fahmy, on the The World Tomorrow programme with journalist Mohamed Tork. There is also a seminar titled “Faculties of sciences and scientific journalism in Egypt” in Maspero and a celebration of the faculty’s scientists in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education and Cairo University.

The Faculty of Sciences is not only celebrating the past 100 years of innovation, research and science. It’s also celebrating another 100 years to come.
