The world of science is a mind-boggling one, revolving around everything that happens in nature. Needless to say, without this intellectual and comprehensive form of study, so many aspects of today would not have existed, such as engineering, medicine, and several other branches. To empower scientists, platforms must be provided for them to speak their minds and introduce their innovative ideas to society. Which brings us to the internationally established, and acclaimed competition, FameLab, launching its 11th season in Egypt.
According to their page, “FameLab is high-stakes science at its best. The competition works towards identifying the new voices of science and engineering by giving experts a platform to showcase their knowledge.” Organised by Cheltenham Festivals, a non-profit organisation founded in 1945, and the British Council, contestants across the world are allowed 3 minutes on stage to pitch their ideas. The competition then concludes at the FameLab International Final at the Cheltenham Science Festival, one of the UK’s leading science festivals.
In a collaboration between the British Council and the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT), Egyptian participants, from the age of 18 to 40, can present their proposals in the fields of technology, engineering, medicine, biology, chemistry, physics, or mathematics, according to Egypt Today.
Shaimaa Al Banna, Head of the Science Programme at the British Council said, “While the competition allows us to stir a conversation around science, it also contributes to the employability for people in STEM [a term used to group the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering, andmaths]. A better understanding of research means better understanding of its wider relevance to society. Relevance builds support and leads to better funding. It also helps non-scientists understand how discoveries make communities healthier and lives better”.
Last year, over 1600 applicants from 26 governorates applied, so we can’t wait to see what will happen this year. You can check out this link for more details on FameLab and how to apply. But hurry up, because the deadline is only a month away.
