While many are quick to point out the increasing number of food festivals that are popping up across Egypt, it really should come as no surprise. It’s become a cliché on Cairo 360, but we really are a nation that loves to eat and so the advent of the food festival seems like a natural step – the only thing better than food, is lots of food all in one place.

It’s not as simple as that, of course, and the various gastronomic gatherings are peppered with other features – entertainment, music, shopping vendors and other activities – things that the American University in Cairo have lined-up for the inaugural edition of their own ode to food, The Festival.

Set to take place on Friday 18th  of March, The Festival is tapping into the growing food and beverages sector in Egypt. Yes, we’re a country that loves food, but the food festival trend is as much a reaction to the burgeoning and increasingly eclectic food field in the country as much as it is catering to our shared food-based instincts.

The event is set to take place at the AUC New Cairo campus and will bring together food vendors from all walks of life – from pizzas and burgers, to Oriental food and desserts, with the cherry on top of this carnival of cuisine a performance from the biggest band in the Middle East, Mashrou’ Leila.

The Lebanese alt-rockers, who will arrive in Egypt as part of a tour promoting their latest album, Ibn El Leil (Son of the Night), are promising a special show – one that was designed specifically for the London’s Barbican Centre for the Performing Arts – with a new sound that will be presented as an audiovisual experience of sorts.

All in all, it’s shaping up to be a huge day for food and music fans alike.
