Recently, people have been following the latest achievements that have been attained by Egyptian adults. But, unintentionally, they have forgotten that children and teens have also been making a difference in our society and developing the Egyptian image abroad. To prove this statement, we introduce to you third year primary student, or should we say “genius”, Ahmed Osama Mohamed Mandour, and third year secondary student, Youssef Yaser Morsi.

In a post by Egypt’s Academy of Scientific Research & Technology (ASRT), following an outstanding victory at this year’s Genius Olympiad in New York, spokesperson, Shereen Sabry, stated that Mandour won the silver medal (second place), while Morsi received a partially funded scholarship to the University of Swago in the USA. Both students were nominated by the Ministry of Education and were able to travel, thanks to the support of the ASRT. The international competition took place last week, from the 17th to the 22nd, and consisted of almost 1700 projects from 78 countries from all around the world, with 1400 participating students, specialising in various branches of science and engineering. Sabry concluded her statement, by thanking the Egyptian parliament, parliamentarian Magda Bakry, and Deputy Minister of Higher Education & Scientific Research, Dr Yasser Arafat.

Sada El-Balad English shared a statement by Dr. Mahmoud Sakr, the President of the Academy, who said, “A special grant program and an institutionalised system were planned to support the participation of Egyptian students in international exhibitions and competitions within the framework of the Academy’s executive plan to support innovation, innovators and speakers”.

On the Genius Olympiad Facebook page, the post stated that the competition promotes a global understanding of environmental issues and the achievement of sustainability through basic science, arts, creative writing, engineering, design, and policy development. It provides challenges and opportunities for secondary school students, to instil in them the skills and knowledge needed to be the citizens, leaders, scientists, artists, writers, engineers, and policymakers of the future – agents who will promote and contribute to greater environmental sustainability throughout their lives.
