It’s Wednesday, which means one thing in Cairo – new films day! Yay. Over-the-top celebrations aside, this week offers a little bit of everything, including Daniel Craig like you’ve never seen him before…

Logan Lucky

Steven Soderbergh’s first film in five years tell the story of the unlucky Logan brothers, who plan a heist of during a NASCAR race, while recruiting the help of eccentric convicted safecracker, Joe Bang. With a terrific cast that includes Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Daniel Craig, Katie Holmes, Hilary Swank and Brian Gleeson, this is the film that pulled Soderbergh out of his supposed retirement  – but people have been talking about one thing: Daniel Craig’s bleach-blonde, tattooed oddball character.

What to Expect: To never see Daniel ‘007’ Craig the same way again, genuine comedy and fantastic chemistry between Craig, Tatum and Driver.

6 Days

It’s not often you see true life action thrillers based in the UK, but that’s exactly what 6 Days is. Focusing on the Iranian Embassy Siege of 1980, the film tracks the tense standoff as the SAS prepared to raid the embassy. While it can only be called a low budget film, what 6 Days  has going for is its established cast of Jamie Bell, Abbie Cornish and one of the most underrated actors in the business, Mark Strong.

What to Expect: British film grittiness, lots of talking and a powerhouse performance from Mark Strong.

American Assassin

Based on a 2010 novel of the same name, American Assassin is cut from the same cloth as films like Jack Ryder. After the death of his parents in a traffic accident and the death of his fiancé in a terrorist attack, vengeance and lack of purpose find Mitch Rapp enlisted by the CIA. He eventually finds himself fighting a mysterious operative in Turkey who is intent on causing all-out war in the Middle East. The protagonist of the piece is played by relative unknown, Dylan O’Brien, with Michael Keaton playing his war veteran instructor and Taylor Kitsch playing the mysterious operative.

What to Expect: Generic action, hammy acting and one too many unnecessary twists.

Victoria & Abdul

Based on a book of the same name, this week’s potential sleeper hit follows the real-life relationship between Queen Victoria and her Indian attendant, Abdul Karim – a relationship that is still scrutinised today. Serving her during the last fifteen years of her reign Abdul Karim came to be close companion to Victoria, who’s played by the always brilliant Judi Dench. Having debuted at the Venice Film Festival, it’s largely received positive reaction, particularly Dench’s performance.

What to Expect: An underlying British sense of humour, a touching message of acceptance and a suitably grand performance from Judi Dench.
