New in Cairo Cinemas: What to Expect From This Week’s Top Film Releases
Cairo 360
This week, one film is one everyone’s lips – The Little Vampire. No, we’re just kidding. We’re of course speaking of DC’s magnum opus-come-Avengers-challenger (out on Thursday, not the usual Wednesday), which finally hits cinemas this week alongside a Dave Bautista -starring actioner and a heartwarming story about fitting-in and finding confidence.
What’s it About? DC Comics’ finest finally unite! Inspired Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and Cyborg come to blows with a villain that threatens to enslave the world – and then there’s the small matter of Superman’s absence.
Why it Might Be Good: DC’s answer to The Avengers has been one of the most anticipated and talked-about movies of the year – just the thought of DC universe finally beginning to take full shape has many a filmgoer wagging their tail in delight and it seems that the producers have finally addressed the often-mentioned sombre tone.
Why it Might Be Bad: Dogged by rumours of Ben Affleck leaving the franchise, Joss Whedon picking up from where Zack Snyder left after stepping down due to a family tragedy and the fact that neither Batman V Superman nor Suicide Squad went down particularly well, many are expecting the worst.
What’s it About? When their neighbourhood in Brooklyn suddenly comes under attack from militias, an ex-Marine and young girl stick together as they battle to reach a safe zone in Queens.
Why it Might Be Good: WWE wrestler, Dave Bautista, has been impressing with his acting chops over the last few years and he’s finally in the hot seat as a lead in a film that is perfect for his particular set of attributes. An under-siege New York is a nice starting point, too.
Why it Might Be Bad: As positive as one likes to be, this has action B-movie written all over it, with some reviews calling it chaotic, derivative and hollow of any real meaning or statement.
What’s it About? Based on a 2012 novel of the same name, Wonder tells of a child left facially deformed after being born Treacher Collins syndrome, as he tries to fit in at school.
Why it Might Be Good: The novel was a New York Times Bestseller and has all the makings of a heartstring-tugging watch. The impressive Jacob Tremblay stars as the lead, while Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson.
Why it Might Be Bad: Reviews have commented that, although it’s an easy, breezy feel-good watch, it lacks depth, considering the messages and lessons that naturally pour out of this kind of film, and rarely goes beyond skin-deep.
