Unlike last week, Cinema lovers will not be spoilt for choice this time around, when it comes to new movies being released. On the plus side, this gives you time to catch up on last week’s releases. If you’re looking for a light comedy flick, you can hit the exciting animation film Smallfoot, but if something intense is more your style, do not miss Marvel’s Venom starring Tom Hardy.

Smallfoot

What’s it about? This animated feature follows the story of a Yeti who discovers proof of the myth that humans, do in fact,  exist. It’s a direct play around of the Bigfoot myth, only this time, the foot is much smaller. The Yeti is 100% sure of what he saw, but he has to prove it to the doubters.

The good: The plot is absolutely brilliant, the play on the Bigfoot myth is quite unique. Indeed, it will be interesting to see how a Yeti and a human interact, especially with a cast featuring Channing Tatum, James Corden, Danny DeVito, Zendaya, previous rapper Common, and the great basketball player, LeBron James.

The bad: Animation movies are somewhat of a risk for adults; kids will be mostly happy with whatever, but when an animation film tries to accommodate all ages, it sometimes ends up messing it all up. While most reviews are positive, some are slamming it for being a bit boring.

Venom

What’s it about? Unlike most superhero movies, Venom is not the alter-ego of Eddie Brock, but rather another entity, a symbiote to be exact, who gives Eddie Brock the power of a symbiote. Think of him like the Hulk, Bruce Banner is there but sometimes the big green guy comes out to take control when things get real. This is the origin story of Venom, starring the amazing Tom Hardy.

The good: Tom Hardy proves that almost anything he touches turns into gold, especially with his standout roles in The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Dunkirk (2017), Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), or The Revenant (2015), not to mention his role in the TV series Peaky Blinders (2013). Raising expectations even higher is Director Ruben Fleischer, the man behind movies such as Zombieland and Gangster Squad.

The bad: While the cast and director are a solid match, things may still go sideways. The previous movie portrayal of Venom in Spider Man 3 actually ended up disappointing audiences.
