We have one week left in Ramadan, and the Eid celebrations are almost upon us. Accordingly, Cairo’s cinema theatres are beginning to re-stock on new releases, with two movies being released this week:

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

What’s it about?  The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch, as its members Mark Russell ( Kyle Chandler) , Dr Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga), and Madison (Russell Millie Bobby Brown) face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who clashes with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah.

The good: The movie is filled with epic battles. This franchise deserves the chance to fight another day, as it brings back an old classic to the modern world filled with astonishing graphics.

The bad: People believe that the film is so dark and foggy. Additionally, critics have indicated that it is difficult to follow, bordering on the incoherent – not exactly what one might be after in a monster action scene.

MA

What’s it about? Sue Ann (Octavia Spencer), a loner who lives by herself in Ohio town, is asked by Maggie, a new teenager in town (Diana Silvers), to buy some booze for her and her friends. Sue Ann sees it as a chance to make some unsuspecting, and younger, friends of her own. She offers the kids the opportunity to hang out at her basement. Just when the kids think their luck couldn’t get any better, things start happening that make them question the intention of their host.

The good: This movie could be Oscar material, as it might end up being one of this year’s most talked about flicks.

The bad: Critics are comparing The Help (2011), one of Octavia Spencer’s success, with MA. Fans of the former film may not find the latter very palatable.
