In terms of sports, football gets all the limelight, and as Egyptians, we flock to support our national team through triumphs and upsets, but sometimes we fail to give as much deserved attention to our champions in other sports. This time, coinciding with the FIFA World Cup 2018, in which Egypt has qualified for the first time in 28 years, comes a huge event in other sports, one in which Egyptian athletes are performing incredibly well.

The 2018 Mediterranean Games in Tarragona, Spain, has seen Egyptians reach for the gold, and grasp it with both hands. There are 26 nations participating with over 4,000 athletes, and 248 events in 28 sports. The opening ceremony of the event was on the 22nd of June and continues ‘til the first of July.

So how have we been doing so far? Well, our great men and women of sport have managed to garner a total of 23 medals in 5 days of the competition, and we still have a number of athletes competing for more! Our seven golds came courtesy of four athletes, Farida Osman with two in Swimming, Haitham Mahmoud with one in Wrestling, and four medals in Weightlifting, two courtesy of Mohamed Ehab, and two coming from Ahmed Saad. The rest of the medals are divided to seven silver medals and nine bronze medals. This puts Egypt as the sixth in the list of countries with most medals.
