It’s been nearly three days since the big news, and fans are still going crazy. For those who haven’t heard yet, Egyptian athletes, Ali Farag and Nouran Gohar, just brought the championship cup home after both won first place at the U.S. Open (Squash). Not only is this piece dedicated to their tremendous victory and history-making moments, but also to the astounding number of fellow Egyptian players who participated as well, and helped solidify the image of our country internationally.

The championship games took place on the 12th October at Drexel University’s Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia. According to the official website, Ali Farag won a total of three consecutive sets (11-4, 11-7, and 11-2); at the same time, 22-year-old Nouran Gohar made a powerful and inspiring comeback, with a scores of 14-12, 11-8, and 11-7, after her opponent had already secured the first two sets. You can watch both the Men’s and Women’s Final Roundup on PSA SquashTV’s YouTube channel.

Gohar, who will reclaim her global ranking as number two next month, stated, “It was so tough out there, I felt my legs burning like I was doing court sprints with Nour [El Tayeb] out there in the first two games. I just tried to hang in there, and I didn’t want the crowd to be upset about a bad final match”. Meanwhile, the undefeated number-one male player, Farag said, “To be winning not only a major, but the U.S. Open which is one of the most prestigious tournaments we have on the calendar, it feels amazing”.

We also want to give a shout-out to the other 12 female and 13 male Egyptian squash players who took part in the competition, out of a total of 48 men and 48 women. Especially, the decorated athletes and runners-up, Mohamed El Shorbagy and Nour El Tayeb, who are no strangers to exceptional skills and talent in the prestigious sport of squash.

According to PSA World Tour, the victors have qualified for the season-ending PSA World Tour Finals, which will take place in June 2020, as well as cash prizes of 25,000 USD. Needless to say, they both more than deserve it, and we can’t wait to see what they do next in all the championships and tours to come.
