Have you heard FIBA before? That’s right FIBA not “FIFA”. Well, if you haven’t, prepare to be enlightened! TheFederation International Basketball Association (FIBA) Africa Women’s Championship (AfroBasket) is Africa’s biennial basketball championship for women. Not only that, the competition is also the last step before the teams are qualified for participation in the quadrennial FIBA World Championship for Women, as well as the Olympic basketball tournament, which will be held in Tokyo next year.

We are delighted to say that, this year, Egypt has been qualified to the 2019 AfroBasket Women, which will be held from 9th till the 18th of August in DakarSenegal, and hopefully soon, we will be celebrating their even greater victory in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan. Throughout the series of qualification games at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium in Kampala, Uganda, the Egyptian women’s basketball team made us proud in many occasions, including a 64-55 win over the Uganda, a 78-73 score against Rwanda in the semi-finals, and a whopping 90-72 victory, when Egypt sealed the competition versus Kenya.

Egypt, the winner of Zone 5, now joins the other reigning Africans zone champions: Nigeria, host Senegal, Mali, Mozambique and Cote d’ Ivoire, alongside Zone 2 champions Cape Verde, Zone 4 winners Cameroon and Angola who emerged victorious in Zone 6. Before the qualification games, Egypt head coach, Ehab Alalfy said, “My expectations are high for this team. We have been working hard and the goal is always to win and qualify for this year’s women Afrobasket.” Well, you’ve certainly achieved your goal, coach, and we expect it will be accomplished once more in August.

The FIBA Africa Women’s Champions Cup has celebrated three decades in existence so far, since its inauguration in 1985. Moreover, it remains the most prestigious and high profile competition for women’s clubs on the continent and the place where domestic champions come to test themselves against their peers from other African nations, according to the FIBA website.

Check out more about the team right here.

We are rooting for you!! Go Egypt!!
