When you think about American dining, there are certain expectations – namely big flavours and big portions. Cairo restaurants have no issues when it comes to big portions, but it’s the big flavours that many fall down on. You see, few realise that American cuisine is as complex as any and that those big flavours are owed to effective pairings, quality ingredients and precise execution.

In choosing the 2016 Cairo 360 Editors’ Choice Award winners in the category of American Dining, however, we have selected restaurants that understand this all too well and stand as the best and most consistent in what is threatening to become a crowded market.

Fat Cow

From the same mind that gave birth to the Tap, Fat Cow, arrived in Maadi to plenty of fanfare and was able to deliver in style. While it might be considered a late comer to the gourmet burger trend in Cairo, it’s certainly made its mark, with another branch in New Cairo said to be in the works.

The Kiosk

One of the newest award winners, the Kiosk is a little hidden gem in Heliopolis that, from the paper-and-pencil tick-it-off-yourself menu, to the comic-book-plastered bathrooms, you can’t help but be charmed by. More significantly, however, the Kiosk’s burgers are as good as any we’ve tried in the last 12 months.

Lucille’s

An institution in Maadi, Lucille’s might lack the shiny finish that other fellow American Dining Award winners have, but its near-legendary burgers and breakfasts have made it into one of the most popular diners of its kind, while continuing to stand the test of time as a three-time Cairo 360 Editors’ Choice Award winner.

Mince

Having just moved its flagship branch in Zamalek to a bigger space on the island and introduced a spectacular breakfast menu exclusive to that branch, Mince – owned by the same folk behind Mori Sushi and Tamara Lebanese Bistro – was one of the first to spread the joy of gourmet burgers, but continues to expand, thanks to a consistency and quality rarely found in Cairo.

Willy’s Kitchen

Restaurant success stories don’t often emerge from Nasr City, but after opening there unsuspectingly at the start of 2015, Willy’s Kitchen has gone on to be one of the most popular spots for burgers and other hearty bites, and recently opened its second store in Dokki. Don’t be surprised if the third branch comes soon.
