Green Beach: For a Simple Sinai Getaway

Green Beach: For a Simple Sinai Getaway

At some stage everybody reaches a point when the hustle and bustle in living in a city such as Cairo is simply too much. It’s too much traffic, too much noise, too much pollution and just generally too bloody much. At this point, most are faced with two options in order to escape the madness; skipping the country altogether or finding a remote part of Egyptian soil where you can fool yourself into believing that Cairo doesn’t exist.

The latter is where the Green Beach camp in Nuweiba shines.

Nestled around 9 hours from the hustle and bustle of Cairo, Nuweiba is one of the country’s top beauty spots where quaint beach camps lie sandwiched between the breathtaking beauty of the Sinai mountains and the stunning blue of the Red Sea. The area is also famed for its laid back attitude – a world away from the stuffy social attitudes sometimes prevalent else where and the Green Beach camp is a perfect example of everything that makes this little piece of paradise so special.

Upon arriving at the site don’t expect to see hoards of fellow revellers – in fact, depending on the time of year, you may not see any other guests at all.

But don’t let this put you off because Green Beach is actually something of a hidden gem even if it may seem a little too quiet for social butterflies or solo travellers hoping to meet scores of like minded souls.

But what the camp lacks in party atmosphere, it makes up for in friendly and helpful staff, laid back attitudes, open minds and an all round live-and-let-live vibe.

The huts themselves are basic but spotlessly clean and feature sizeable mosquito nets, which are, generally free of holes. One of the camp’s best features is the stunning beach on which it is set and would-be travellers should prepare to be entranced by the hypnotic sounds of the Red Sea waves crashing along the shoreline.

Of course, clean and a beautiful beach are not all that’s on offer at the Green Beach camp and the camp’s Sudanese chef, Nasser, serves up delicious meals. There is no set menu but there are generally basic fish, chicken and vegetarian dishes on offer to suit most tastes. The fish is tasty and the portions are filling. Meanwhile the daily breakfast also provides a pot luck of delicious treats depending on which food is available locally on any given day.

One thing which also sets Green Beach apart from its competitors is the price and the camp’s Bedouin owners offer half board deals for just 150LE per person, per night. Above all else, Green Beach excels at offering travellers a friendly welcome, simple but tasty food and a chance to get away from it all in an unpretentious and relaxed environment.
