‘Bronte’ Screening at Italian Cultural Centre
Director Florestano Vancini’s Bronte, also known as Liberty, was controversial in Italy for its alternative take on sacrosanct history. Based on Giovanni Verga’s 1882 novella Libertà, the film recounts events
that unfolded in Bronte, a town on the Western slopes of Mount Etna, in
the aftermath of Sicily’s liberation by Garibaldi. An uprising led to
the massacre of a number of local leaders.
