‘Chats Perches’ Screening at Townhouse Gallery

Head to the Townhouse Gallery for a screening of Chats Perches. Experimental filmmaker/visual essayist Chris Marker (La Jetee, Le Fond de
l’air est Rouge
) tracks the mysterious stenciled images of a grinning cat
that began to appear in Paris streets around 2001. The filmmaker noticed that
the anonymous graffiti artist responsible for the images seemed to be placing
them in areas he associated with political change – particularly during the social
tumult associated with the beginning of the Iraq War, and the political
ascendancy of the extreme right-wing presidential candidate Jean Marie Le-Pen.
The result is an abstract, non-linear portrait of Paris in the early 2000s, and
the ability of street art to politicize the public sphere.
