D-CAF Festival: ‘Monuments and substitution: a discussion of the exhibition Material’ at Townhouse Gallery
As part of the Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival, Townhouse Gallery hosts Iman Issa in conversation with Mia Jankowicz. In Autumn 2011 Iman Issa created a body of work called Material,
a combination of sculptures claiming to be ‘material for’ other
monuments. These materials acted as alternative proposals, substitutes,
or memorials to the monuments themselves. While each of the monuments
referred to are monuments that have existed, they are not named or
pictured, so that when the viewer sees the ‘materials for’ sculptures,
they must imagine the emotions and events being celebrated and,
possibly, reconstructed by Issa. This exhibition, as well as other ways
in which Issa works, will be discussed by Mia Jankowicz and the artist. Attendance is free.
