A blissful night will be grooving the whole dance floor at CJC 610 this Thursday!!!! Catch DJ Malak Helmy, who’s considered to be a visual artist and writer who started DJing a year ago. Sound and voice have long been part of her visual art practice. She’s had sound installations, such as “Music for Drifting” shown at the Mercosul Biennial, Berlinale Expanded Forum and Nottingham Contemporary, and “Ghost Writer” for Cold Protein, a death metal/scifi inspired podcast, become a guerrilla audio tour of the British Museum. Since 2017 she’s been working on an audio-visual performance, parts of which have been performed at Savvy Contemporary, Berlin and Salinas Museum in Palermo.
She started DJing a year ago as an outlet for ideas in a changing art context in Cairo. She plays music she’s been collecting over the years with sets ranging from hiphop beats to playful house to dark, broody, industrial tracks with interesting vocals, where you’ll find the dance floor getting down then transitioning to interpretive dance pretty easily. Depending on the mood, the night, and the flow, you can always expect a fresh take on music and partying from Malak.
Moreover, Veteran DJ Ahmed Samy will take over the rest of the night. He’s been in the scene for over a decade and is known to spin vinyl records only, producing a sound and style that is so uniquely his own. Ahmed Samy is a resident DJ at Sakanat Studio, and is also the founder of “noname” underground party series as well as “Strictly Vinyl” vinyl mixing DJ course, creating a new generation of DJs following in his lead. He has recently started touring Europe as well as reaching milestones locally such as playing Sandbox festival and a Boiler Room event.
