Jo Van Steenbergen at the Netherlands-Flemish Institute
In this lecture, Professor Van Steenbergen will engage with the idea
that Fatimid Cairo’s function as a ritual city was
continued in a dynamic fashion in the Mamluk period. He will look at
the set-up of this city centre in the late 13th and 14th centuries, and
survey the different layers of meaning that can be attached to it,
questioning at the same time standard paradigms of Mamluk politics and
authority.
