Most of us may not have witnessed the beginning of the enchanting Misr El-Gedida, but we have certainly experienced its enduring magic over the years. This area has captivated all who visit with the fresh mornings and legendary nights it offers. After 120 years since its establishment, let’s take a moment to revisit how this magnificent beauty came to life and how it continues to preserve its unparalleled charm through the years.
How It Started
It all started in 1905 when the company of Cairo Electric Railways and Heliopolis Oases was founded by the Belgian Baron Edward Empain. Baron Empain partnered with Boghos Nubar, and both decided to establish a small city on the outskirts of the north of Cairo, which later became the whole area of Misr El-Gedida.
Planned and designed by passionate founders and magnificent artists, Misr El-Gedida was always destined to be an architectural dreamland with an enduring spirit and irresistible charm. The city was built over the ruins of old Heliopolis by intelligently turning a bare desert into a habitable city capable of housing and captivating people from all walks of life. This vitality curved it into an area that withstood numerous decades and still prevailed beautifully.
The Baron Empain Palace: The Cornerstone of Misr El-Gedida
The implementation of this vision started in 1911 with the construction of the legendary Baron Empain Palace. Inspired by the temples of Cambodia, this palace was designed by the hands of French architect Alexandre Marcel.
Alexandre Marcel created this architectural icon by meticulously blending the European, Islamic, and Hindu architectural styles. This deliberate blend represented and, in some ways, predicted the cultural diversification of Cairo, the capital that had always gathered and blended global muse in its own signature essence.
Misr El-Gedida over the Years
With time passing, this vital diversity has only expanded and intensified. Even with the arrival of modernity, new buildings and shops never tried or succeeded in changing the identity of Misr El-Gedida but could only blend in with its classic charm.
Each corner of Misr El-Gedida holds something unparalleled, from Korba to Hegaz. In each bit, you’d find yourself stumbling upon something mesmerising; from the hundred-year-old trees, historical castles, majestical churches, vintage villas, quality dining and street food, or even just the average buildings and the street, you’d find some kind of sentiment and enjoyment. So, this season, celebrate the love and heritage of Misr El-Gedida and take some time to stroll and marvel.
