Egypt has always been brimming with artists. Not just in the ancient times with the admittedly hard to surpass work of art or in our Golden Age of Cinema decades ago, but now too. There are thousands of artists from Egypt working here and abroad.

Here are five contemporary artists that we think you should keep an eye on!

Ahmed El Badawi

This artist was born in Giza in 1990 and graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in 2012, but he was exhibiting his work long before that. He started in 2005 when he was just 15 by participating in several group exhibitions like “Al Talaee” exhibition, the Youth Salon, Dai Festival for Arab Youth, Future Generation Art Prize Exhibition, and Farouk Hosny Association for Arts & Culture. He also had solo exhibitions like “Direction” at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Zamalek, in 2018.

Mariam ElReweny

A graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Mariam El-Reweny is one of the most talented illustrators in the scene today, mastering both traditional and digital mediums. She currently works as a freelance illustrator with multiple projects ranging from personal to commercial.

Mohammed Jamal Bassiouni

Mohammed Bassiouni was born in Alexandria in 1993. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Fine Arts. Mohammed participated in several Youth Salons and General Salons through the Ministry of Culture in Egypt and has exhibited in different cities in Egypt.

Adham Ghareeb

Another Alexandrian-based artist, Adham Ghareeb was born in 1990. He graduated from the Department of Graphics at the Faculty of Fine Arts in 2011 and has since participated in exhibitions across Cairo and Alexandria. Heavily influenced by the surrealist art movement and its major frontrunners like Salvador Dali, Ghareeb’s work explores the subconscious, the illogical, and the dream-like.

Amre Heiba

Despite graduating from the faculty of science, Amre had always been drawn to art. He started participating in art groups in the 1970s and has been showcasing in exhibitions ever since. He’s a member of L’ATELIER (Groupement des Artistes et des Ecrivains), Fikrun Wa Fann Gallery of the Goethe Institute in Alexandria and of the Syndicate of Visual Artists.
