With the 48th anniversary of the passing of Umm Kulthum’s behind us on February 3, Umm Kulthum, honoured as Kawkab al-Sharq, left an indelible mark as an Egyptian singer, songwriter, and film actress from the 1920s to the 1970s. Beyond her well-known legacy, here are some lesser-known facts about the iconic artist.

 

The Two Songs That Umm Kalthoum Performed Once

Ektebley Keteer and Waqft Awdaa’ Habibi are the only two songs in Umm Kulthum’s career which she only performed once. It’s speculated that these tunes may not have resonated as strongly with her audience. Despite not making it to the studio or returning to the stage, the live performances were captured and documented, adding an air of mystery to these unique musical moments in Umm Kulthum’s illustrious career.

Umm Kalthoum Was One of the First Female Members of the Al Ahly Club 

After the iconic club allowed female membership in 1916, Umm Kalthoum became among its first female members. Her passion for the Al Ahly club was legendary. It was known that whoever would inform her that Al Ahly won a game would get handed a 5 EGP bill by the renowned artist. Samir Sabry, in his book Hekayat Al ’Omr Kolo, shared that in a candid moment, when asked what she would rather be besides a singer, Umm Kulthum humorously revealed her dream: “a goalkeeper for Al Ahly club”, showcasing the depth of her affection for the team.

Behind the Iconic Sunglasses

When thoughts turn to Umm Kulthum, her iconic sunglasses immediately come to mind. However, behind those iconic shades, Umm Kulthum battled Graves’ disease, a condition that left her eyes highly sensitive to light. This sensitivity compelled her to use sunglasses most of the time, particularly during her performances on stage.

Umm Kalthoum Organised Many Fundraising Parties & Concerts 

The most famous fundraising event Umm Kalthoum hosted occurred in Al Darb Al-Ahmar. On the fifth of Ramadan, 1373 Hijri, Darb Al-Ahmar residents readied for an awaited event organised by the Darb Al-Ahmar Liberation Committee, hosted by the iconic singer. This time, the objective was funding vital local projects, a departure from her usual concerts supporting war efforts. The Egyptian Radio Magazine detailed the event on May 8, 1954, dedicating two pages to “Umm Kalthoum Sings for Goodness and Humanity”. Beyond locals, notable figures from the July 23 Revolution attended, including Vice President Hussein El-Shafei and Minister Kamal El-Din Hussein, making it a memorable Ramadan night.
