Once Ramadan starts, we find ourselves glued to our television screens, eagerly awaiting and anticipating the narratives behind each series. This year, in particular, we’ve noticed that many series delve deeply into the fabric of our communities, addressing crucial issues and societal dilemmas. Here are the ones that have caught our attention so far:

 

Surrogacy – Selet Rahem

Previously addressed in Hadoota Mansya, the discussion around surrogacy is gradually being brought to the table on Egyptian and Arab screens. Following the immense recognition garnered by Hadoota Mansya, we were astonished to discover that Selet Rahem was crafted solely to shed light on surrogacy in Egypt.

 

Abusive Relationships – Lahzet Ghadab

Fatherhood in the Middle East has long been burdened by stigma and toxic masculinity. Baba Geh delves into the absence of fathers from their children’s lives, examining aspects such as physical absence, emotional distance, and deceased father figures. As the episodes unfold, we delve into more stories, each tackled within the same sequence of events. 

 

Secret Marriage – Massar Egbari

One of the main characters, Malak Koura, takes a job in a casino to support her family and faces many unpleasant encounters and comments. A recent episode ended with her being followed and subjected to attempted harassment, shedding light on this critical issue within our community.

 

Single Parenthood – Embratoryet Meem

Since day one, Embratoryet Meem has shed light on family dynamics, with a widowed father trying to fill the role of two parents. As episodes unfold, we start to notice the meaning behind each scene and dialogue, showing the struggles of parenthood. As Khaled El Nabawy’s character attempts to better his relationship with his children, we notice a number of societal issues being brought up. The script uses many phrases Egyptian kids and young adults are brought up hearing, tackling stigmas within Egyptian family dynamics both directly and subconsciously.
