‎Spies in Disguise: Good, But Not Extraordinary ‎

The animated spy movie, Spies in Disguise, stars heartthrobs Will Smith and Tom Holland; are these names a guarantee that it’ll be a hit?

Spies in Disguise follows renowned spy Lance Sterling (Will Smith) as he is being framed for stealing a powerful weapon that he was assigned to return to the government. On the run, Lance seeks the help of goofy scientist Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) to help him disappear. Instead, Walter, with one of his nonviolent weaponry creation experiments, accidentally turns him into a pigeon. With little help from the strictly nice, nonviolent Walter, the odd couple has to learn to work together to save countless agents from the man who framed Lance.

The promising plot takes the film away from the animations’ run-of-the-mill clichés, especially with its good pace and constant dose of action. The most interesting aspect of the film is how it uses Walter’s ideology of peace to generate comedy, before finally proving that it could actually work.

The humour, however, is mediocre; the safe script relies on little wit, and standard material. Yes, seeing someone turn into a pigeon is funny, but the film starts out offering more than just that, which is a disappointment to audiences older than six years old.

The animation of Spies in Disguise is appealing, boasting vibrant colours and likable characters – especially the birds’. Despite having small and mute roles, their characters were distinctive, colourful, and likable.

For the voice roles, Will Smith’s performance was amazing and it would have been so much better with a funnier script. Tom Holland’s performance was less enthusiastic, yet it was good enough for his role.

Spies in Disguise has very good intentions and messages about coexistence and peace, but don’t expect to be blown away.
